Dream of Water

the soil under the grass
is dreaming of a young forest,

and under the pavement the soil
is dreaming of grass.

-From “In a Country Once Forested” by Wendell Berry

These prints were created using river rocks excavated from my property; rocks that were swept to their current location by rivers and  floods, their rough edges ground and smoothed, their surfaces imprinted and shaped by the passage of time and the movement of water through the landscape of Walla Walla.

Through multiple layers of cyanotype emulsion and water, images and silhouettes are imprinted, layered, obscured then uncovered. These prints consider the rocks that too had been obscured by mountains, rivers and earth, and were ultimately uncovered and exposed.  Do they dream of the rivers that once held them?
